A JOKE

Father: I want you to marry a girl of my choice

Son: "I will choose my own bride!"

Father: "But the girl is Bill Gates's daughter."

Son: "Well, in that case...ok"

Next Father approaches Bill Gates.

Father: "I have a husband for your daughter."

Bill Gates: "But my daughter is too young to marry!"

Father: "But this young man is a vice-president of the World Bank."

Bill Gates: "Ah, in that case...ok"

Finally Father goes to see the president of the World Bank.

Father: "I have a young man to be recommended as a vice-president."

President: "But I already have more vice- presidents than I need!"

Father: "But this young man is Bill Gates's son-in-law."

President: "Ah, in that case...ok"

This is how business is done!!

10 simple steps to be safe in the digital era

Cyber crime is here to stay. The PC revolution and the Internet boom in India have introduced new elements to cyber crime: elements that make cyber crime one of the most dangerous issues facing the modern society.

Children and innocent netizens are now being subjected to an unprecedented barrage of innovative cyber attacks: for instance, a rising number of phishing' attacks have emerged as a new, big threat of cyber security.

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group statistics, approximately 5 per cent users fall prey to phishing scams. Spam, viruses, worms and other malicious code account for global losses of several billion dollars.

So how do you protect yourself from these attacks?

Here are 10 simple steps to cover you against more than 80 per cent of all the causes of information security breaches:

1. Install the latest antivirus software on your computer and never ever turn it off; install a personal firewall and spyware checker (all are available for free on the Net). To find them just do a search on the Net using the keywords: antivirus & free.

2. Never download or open attachments whose source you are not certain about. Even if the source is trusted, see if the content is relevant. If not, don't open attachment. Create another email ID which you use exclusively for subscription to sites. That will prevent spam from coming to your main ID. Some mail accounts allow you to create topic-specific email IDs that you can delink.

3. Avoid checking mail or using credit card details online in cyber cafes. It is next to impossible to be sure that it is safe. Even reputed café's such as those at international airports and 5-star hotels have known to be key-logged. As a matter of fact, open an additional debit card with a limit if you do want to transact online. This way, in the worst case scenario your damages are limited.

4. Do not give away your residence phone number or cellphone number. Be especially careful when you are filling in contest forms, coupons, free gift vouchers, etc. More often than not these are gimmicks to obtain your personal details. Don't believe it when they say the data will not be given to others -- it most certainly will be. Don't print these numbers on your visiting card.

5. Get into the habit of destroying documentation regarding credit cards, such as receipts, bills, invoices or any documents that contain personal details.

6. If you are using broadband or working from home, ensure that your PC is hardened professionally. This can also be done by yourself if you follow the next step.

7. Information is a reality of modern life: just like health or transport or communications. The point is that you need to know something about it, even if it's just some basics. Read about information security breaches by subscribing to some newsletters. In the case of many breaches, the only defense is knowledge. For instance, no technology could have prevented the phishing attack (wherein victims got mails seemingly from legitimate banks asking them to confirm their passwords and IDs).

8. Use two different passwords. One for mail, work and other important access and the other for routine proposes such as subscribing to sites, etc. But remember to switch between them when you start doing transactions after mere browsing.

9. Create a difficult-to-guess password by taking the first alphabet from each word of a phrase. For instance a password like 1at*eomc is constructed using a phrase "I am the star employee of my company."

10. Educate your children about the dangers of cyber crime. Children with their unbound curiosity and unmonitored access are the single most common victims of cyber crime apart from the enterprises. Ensure that the home PC is kept in a common place so that you can monitor what is going on.

FORMS OF GANESHA

"Lord Ganesh"

Ganesha or Ganapati is an extremely popular God in India. He is called Vighneshvara or Vighnaharta, the Lord of and destroyer of obstacles. People mostly worship Him asking for siddhi, success in undertakings, and buddhi, intelligence. He is worshipped before any venture is started. He is also the God of education, knowledge and wisdom, literature, and the fine arts.

Ganesha is also one of the five Gods the worship of whom was popularised by Adi Shankaracharya; the other four are Vishnu, Shiva, Devi and Surya. The worship of these five deities is called the pancAyatana pUjA. In some cases, a sixth God, Skanda is also worshipped.

Perhaps the most popular story regarding Ganesha's origin is the one derived from the Shiva Purana:

Mother Parvati once wanted to take a bath and created a boy from the dirt of Her own body, asking him to stand as a guard outside while She bathed. In the meantime Lord Shiva returned home to find a stranger at His door, preventing Him from entering. In anger, Shiva cut off the boy's head, upon which Parvati was stricken with great grief. In order to console Her, Shiva sent out His troops (gaNa) to fetch the head of anyone found sleeping with his head pointing to the north. They found an elephant sleeping thus and brought back its head.

Shiva then attached the elephantine head to the body of the boy and revived him. He named the boy Ganapati or commander of His troops, and granted Him a boon that anyone would have to worship Him (Ganesha) before beginning any undertaking.

The Brahma vaivarta Purana narrates a different story regarding the origin of Ganapati:

Shiva instructed Parvati, who wanted to have a son, to observe the puNyaka vrata for a year to propitiate Vishnu.

O Beautiful Goddess! Perform the worship of Hari by observing the punyaka vrata for a year. The Lord of Gopikas, the Lord of all creatures, Krishna Himself will be born as your son, as a result of the vrata.

On completion of the vrata by Parvati, it was announced that Krishna would incarnate Himself as Her son in every kalpa. Accordingly, Krishna was born as a charming infant, delighting Parvati who celebrated the event with great enthusiasm.

All the Gods arrived to have a look at the baby. But Shani, the son of Surya, did not look at him and stared at the ground instead. Upon Parvati's questioning regarding his behaviour, Shani said that his look would harm the baby. Parvati, however, insisted that he should look at the baby. In deference to Her wish Shani cast his eyes on the baby. Due to his malevolent glance, the baby's head was severed and flew to Goloka, the abode of Krishna. Parvati and all the Gods assembled there, including Shiva, were grief-stricken.

Thereupon, Vishnu mounted Garuda and rushed to the banks of the Pushpa-bhadra river and brought back the head of a young elephant. The head of the elephant was joined with the headless body of Parvati's son, reviving him. All the Gods blessed Ganesha and wished Him power and prosperity. Vishnu blessed Ganesha thus:

O Excellent God! O dear one! May Your pUjA be performed before that of any other God. May You be situated in all venerable beings and may You be the best among Yogis. This is My boon to You.

Shiva made Ganesha the leader of his troops (gaNa), and also gave Him the following boon:

All obstacles, whatever they may be, will be rooted out by worshipping Ganesha, even as diseases are cured by the worship of Surya and purity results when Vishnu is worshiped.

Ganesha's elephantine head and human body are explained as follows in the Mudgala Purana:

Ganesha's human body representing 'tvam', His elephantine countenance representing 'tat' and their joining together signifies the nondifference of 'tvam' (You) and 'tat' (Brahman). Thus, the body of Ganesha is the visible representation of the highest reality, Brahman, realised from 'tat tvam asi'.

Another explanation has it that Ganesha's head signifies Atman the Highest Reality, while the body below the neck represents mAyA, the principle of phenomenal existence. The Atman's involvement with the world is characterised by the assumption of mind and speech.

Ganesha's ears, which appear like large winnowing baskets, have a philosophical significance too. Just as one uses a winnowing basket to separate grains from dirt, one must use discrimination (viveka) to separate the real (Brahman) from the unreal (mAyA) in life. Here the grains stand for Brahman and the dirt signifies mAyA. Or, Ganesha's ears indicate that such discrimination between Brahman and mAyA is to be gained by taking recourse to SravaNa or hearing. Listening to the scriptures from a Guru will lead to proper discrimination and Brahman realisation.

RULE OF 72

You can quickly figure out in your head how long it will take for a sum of money to double by applying the "Rule of 72."
You simply take whatever interest rate you're earning and divide it into 72. The result will be the number of years required to double your money.
example if the rate of interest is 12% the no of years to double your money will be 72/12 = 6.
If the rate of interest is 9% the no of years to double your money will be 72/9 = 8 years.
You can apply the rule backwards as well.
Let's say you have a lump sum of 5,000 that you would like to grow into 10,000 in 8 years. You would need to find an investment that pays 9% compound interest. (72/8 = 9).
If the best you can find is an 8% return on your money (hypothetically speaking,) then it would take you 9 years to double your money.

PRAYER AND FINANCE MINISTER

A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened.

Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50. When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, India, they decided to forward it to the Finance Minister of India as a joke.

The Finance Minister was so amused, that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy Rs.20. The Finance Minister thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy, and he did not want to spoil the kid.

The little boy was delighted with Rs.20, and decided to write a thank you note to God, which read:

"Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that you sent it through the Finance Minister in Delhi, and that donkey deducted Rs.30 as tax!!!!

ELECTRICITY SAVING TIPS

HOW TO SAVE ENERGY WHILE USING YOUR APPLIANCES?

In recent times, our country has been experiencing a severe power crisis. There is power shortage and frequent power cuts. Here are some tips with the help of which you can save power and also save on your electricity bills!

TO SAVE ELECTRICITY AND KEEP ROOMS COOL DO THE FOLLOWING WHEN USING A ROOM AIR CONDITIONER:

Turn off any light and electric equipment that are not required as they generate heat.
Select the thermostat setting as desired. A temperature of 25°C is usually recommended. One will use 3 to 5 percent less energy for each degree air conditioner is set above22°C (71.5°F), so set the thermostat of room air conditioner at 25°C (77°F) to provide the most comfort at the least cost. The air conditioner should be shut off if the room is to be kept unoccupied for more than 24 hours.
The air conditioner should be shut off if the room is to be kept unoccupied for more than 24 hours.
Make sure that doors and windows are closed to keep the cool air inside the house.
During hot days keep the house closed tightly, and use natural or forced ventilation at night when the air is cooler. Use the "ventilate" or "outside air" control on the room air conditioner sparingly.
Do not block the air conditioner vents with furniture and other household.
Use the continuous air conditioner fan operation only when the resulting air movement is required to maintain comfortable conditions in the room.
Insulating your home for the summer is as good an idea as for winter. A well-insulated house will not let in hot humid air and will keep your house cooler.

SOME ENERGY SAVING FACTS FOR REFRIGERATOR:

Keep your refrigerator well stocked, but not overcrowded. Air circulation is needed.
Never put hot foods in the refrigerator ·
Don't store paper bags or anything else behind the refrigerator. They can cut airflow, making the refrigerator work harder.
Wipe the moisture off the containers stored.
Don't put foil on refrigerator shelves. It blocks cold airflow and makes the unit work harder.
Don't put uncovered liquids in the refrigerator. They force the refrigerator to work harder to remove the moisture.
Keep the freezer full by filling plastic milk bottles with water. A fully loaded freezer will stay cold longer than one that is partially full.
Keep door gaskets tight and pliable.
Don't open the doors unnecessarily.Never open the refrigerator door too wide. Keep door openings to a minimum.
Keep external coils free from dust and lint.
Placement of the refrigerator is very important. Direct sunlight and close contact with hot appliances will make the compressor work harder. More importantly, heat from the compressor and condensing coil must be able to escape freely, or it will cause the same problem. Don't suffocate the refrigerator by enclosing it tightly in cabinets or against the wall. The proper breathing space will vary depending on the location of the coils and compressor on each model--something important to know before the cabinets are redesigned.

SAVE YOUR ELECTRICITY BILLS ON MICROWAVE OVENS:

If your microwave oven has the defrosting feature, defrost frozen food before cooking it.
In case your microwave oven does not have the defrosting feature, save your cooking time, by defrosting frozen foods outside before cooking.
Plan ahead - defrosting food in a microwave may be convenient, but defrosting it at room temperature costs nothing.
Never peek into the oven many times when cooking. Each time you do that, a certain amount of heat escapes from the oven and the food takes longer to cook, thus increasing your electricity bill.
Keep inside surfaces clean so the microwave radiation can reach food effectively.

SAVE ELECTRICITY ON YOUR DESKTOPS:

Turn off your home office equipment when not in use. A computer that runs 24 hours a day, for instance, uses - more power than an energy-efficient refrigerator.
If your computer must be left on, turn off the monitor; this device alone uses more than half the system's energy.
Setting computers, monitors, and copiers to use sleep-mode when not in use helps cut energy costs by approximately 40%.
Battery chargers, such as those for laptops, cell phones and digital cameras, draw power whenever they are plugged in and are very inefficient. Pull the plug and save. · Screen savers save computer screens, not energy. Start-ups and shutdowns do not use any extra energy, nor are they hard on your computer components. In fact, shutting computers down when you are finished using them actually reduces system wear - and saves energy.
